The Short Answer

Yes. Absolutely yes. And I say that as someone who just gave Book 4 a 3.4 out of 5, so I’m not just blindly hyping this up. The Frankie Elkins series is one of those reading experiences you genuinely don’t come across very often, and once you understand what it is, you’re going to want to start from the beginning.

Who Is Frankie Elkins?

Here’s the thing about Frankie — she’s not a detective. She’s not a cop, not a PI, not a former FBI agent with a tragic backstory who now runs a private firm out of a sleek downtown office. She’s a woman who is homeless by choice, travels from town to town, takes odd jobs, and finds missing people. Specifically, the missing people that nobody else is looking for. The ones who fall through the cracks of official channels because they don’t fit the profile of a victim anyone is going to prioritize.

That’s it. That’s the whole premise. And it shouldn’t work as well as it does, but it absolutely does.

There’s no romance. No steam. No love interest waiting for her when she gets back to her apartment, because there is no apartment. Frankie lives out of a backpack and walks into situations that have nothing to do with her and makes them her problem until they’re solved. She is completely her own person in a way that female leads in thrillers rarely get to be, and that is genuinely refreshing.

The Books, Ranked and Reviewed

Book 1 — Before She Disappeared | ⭐ 4.3/5 | Steam: 🔥

This is the one that introduces you to Frankie and makes you understand exactly what kind of series this is going to be. The premise hooks you, Frankie hooks you, and by the time you’re done you’re already reaching for Book 2. A very strong start.

Book 2 — One Step Too Far | ⭐ 4.6/5 | Steam: 🔥

The highest rated book in the series for a reason. This one is a whole experience — a different kind of case, Frankie pushed into completely new territory. If you’re on the fence about continuing after Book 1, this is the book that will lock you in for good.

Book 3 — Still See You Everywhere | ⭐ 4.2/5 | Steam: 🔥

A solid entry that keeps the series moving in interesting directions. Not quite the high of Book 2, but still a very good read. Frankie continues to evolve and the cases keep getting more layered.

Book 4 — Kiss Her Goodbye | ⭐ 3.4/5 | Steam: 🔥

The weakest entry so far, and I’ll be honest about that. The case involves international espionage, hidden gold, MI6, and a web of flashbacks that took a really long time to click into place. The pieces do eventually come together, but the middle of this book is a lot of work. Still worth reading if you’re already this deep — and the ending sets up Book 5 in a way that has me genuinely curious.

What This Series Gets Right

Frankie is the thing. Everything else in this series works because Frankie works. Lisa Gardner built a protagonist who is unconventional in every possible way — no home, no partner, no team, no resources beyond her own brain and her absolute refusal to give up — and then dropped her into cases that actually matter. The people Frankie finds aren’t just thriller plot devices. They feel real, and the reasons they went missing feel real, and Frankie’s determination to find them feels real.

The cases are also consistently interesting. Gardner doesn’t play it safe with the subject matter. You’re going to encounter heavy topics across this series — refugee crises, violence, grief, loss — and it’s handled with weight. This is not a cozy mystery series. It takes the missing seriously.

And the lack of steam is a feature, not a bug. There are so few series out there where the female lead is just doing her thing, without a romantic subplot running alongside it. Frankie’s story is Frankie’s story. That’s rare and it’s worth celebrating.

What to Know Before You Start

Read them in order. This is not a series you can pick up anywhere. Frankie’s story builds across all four books and there are recurring characters whose presence in later books only lands if you’ve met them before. Start with Book 1, no exceptions.

The cases are complex. This is not a fast-plot thriller where everything clicks together in the first chapter. Gardner layers her mysteries and reveals things slowly — which is mostly a strength, though Book 4 leans on it a little too hard. Go in with patience.

There is absolutely no steam. If you picked this up hoping for a slow-burn romance tucked in somewhere, it’s not there. This is pure thriller all the way through.

The Verdict

Is the Frankie Elkins series worth reading?

Yes. Without question. Three books at 4.2 or above, and even the weakest entry is still a 3.4 — which means I finished it and I’m picking up Book 5 the second it comes out. This is a series with a genuinely unique premise, a protagonist you don’t forget, and cases that make you think.

If you’ve been looking for something different in the thriller space — a female lead who isn’t defined by her relationships, no steam, real complexity and real weight — this is your series.

Start with Book 1. You’ll understand immediately.

Reading Order

  1. Before She Disappeared — ⭐ 4.3/5
  2. One Step Too Far — ⭐ 4.6/5
  3. Still See You Everywhere — ⭐ 4.2/5
  4. Kiss Her Goodbye — ⭐ 3.4/5
