The Opening
This one opens with a really sweet moment. Maggie and her daughter Paige are planning James’s 50th birthday. He went all out for Maggie’s 40th, so she wants to return the favour. It’s warm, it’s domestic, it’s normal. And then a detective shows up at the door, asking if she knows a Hannah Nielsen and where is her husband.
Just like that, nothing is normal anymore.
The Full Story — Spoilers Included
Hannah
Twenty-five years ago, Hannah Nielsen was an aspiring model who had just landed the gig of her life. She went camping with James and a group of friends, wandered off in the middle of the night, and was never seen again. Her shirt was found on the beach the next morning. Everyone assumed she’d gone for a swim drunk and drowned. No body, no proof, case closed.
Until now. Renovations at the campsite turned up her remains. She wasn’t anywhere near the water. She was buried deep and this was no accident.
James Is Questioned
James is already a suspect — naturally, the boyfriend always is. He’s been interviewed four times, and now they want him for a fifth. He hires a lawyer, he goes in, gets questioned for hours with the same questions on repeat until his lawyer finally shuts it down. Then they ask him to come back for more questions, he says no. Maggie thinks that’s going to make him look guilty, but honestly? Five interrogations, hours of the same questions, and they want another round? That seems outrageous. He’s already fully cooperated. The detective should have used his time better I guess.
James tells Maggie to stay out of it — like, seriously, just stay out of it. She agrees. She lies.
Maggie Can’t Let It Go
Maggie is almost obsessive about this. She goes to see Parker, one of James’s oldest friends who was at that camping trip, and basically interrogates him. Parker says he woke up briefly and saw Hannah wander off, but James was still asleep in the tent. He knows James wasn’t involved, 100%.
James calls her immediately after, upset. Parker told him she came by. She keeps going — she reaches out to Nico Barlow, another person who was on that trip, and eventually gets Diana’s contact, the fifth member on the trip. Diana never calls back… at first.
The Arrest
Later, James is arrested. The evidence? His hair on Hannah’s shirt. His shirt, that she was sleeping in. In the same tent. His lawyer tears it apart at the bail hearing: wrong county on the warrant, arrest thrown out. They go home and wait to see if the right county will charge him. So far, they don’t think they have enough.
Diana Comes Forward
Then Diana reaches out. She sat through a five-hour interrogation, same questions on repeat, until she finally walked out. And she’s done hiding.
The part they never told police: Parker didn’t just wake up and roll over. He followed Hannah. The next morning he was visibly agitated. Diana thinks Parker was deeply, deeply in love with Hannah.
Parker claims he followed her out of concern. Hannah started stripping, said she wanted to swim as far out as she could, and when he pushed back she turned nasty and told him to leave. So he did.
Diana doesn’t believe that for a second.
Maggie Confronts Parker
Armed with what Diana told her, Maggie storms Parker’s office and lays it all out. Parker loses it. Tells her James is not the man she thinks he is, that she has always put him on a pedestal. Then he tosses a plastic toy ring onto the desk. The ring James proposed to Hannah with. Ask your husband, he says. Ask him what really happened that night.
The Confession
James tells her everything.
When Hannah landed the modeling gig, he panicked and proposed on the drive to the campsite. A last-ditch effort to keep her. What he didn’t know yet: Hannah and Parker had been sleeping together for weeks. Parker was furious she said yes to his proposal.
That night, Parker went down to the beach to confront Hannah. James followed. He found them squaring off, Hannah half-naked, yelling at Parker. Both of them had thought James was loyal enough that they each had some power over who he’d choose.
Then Hannah looked at James and laughed. Don’t be a child, James. You didn’t think this was really going to be a happily ever after, did you?
And he strangled her. He told himself to stop, but he just couldn’t, and then she was dead.
He and Parker carried the body and took turns digging. They kept that secret for over 25 years. James says he regrets it, says he’s spent every year since trying to be the best husband, father, and doctor he could be.
Maggie tells him that’s not how this works.
The Ending — Satisfied or Disappointed?
I wasn’t shocked that James killed Hannah. By the time the confession came, that felt like where we were headed. The twist that actually got me? Maggie just drops it.
This woman could not let a single thing go for the entire book. She lied to her husband, interrogated his friends, drove out to see Diana in person, stormed Parker’s office. Relentless. And then she finds out her husband strangled his fiancée and buried her in the woods, and she sits with it… and decides she’s glad.
Because if Hannah had lived, Maggie never would have had her life.
She stays with him.
I don’t know. Crazy. That’s the only word I have for it. How do you go to bed next to someone who strangled a woman with his bare hands because she laughed at him? She spent the whole book needing the truth, and when she finally gets it, she makes peace with it because the alternative is losing everything she has.
I didn’t love the ending. But I haven’t stopped thinking about it, and for a thriller, that’s actually saying something.

🔥 — None. This is a psychological thriller about a 25-year-old murder, a crumbling marriage, and a confession that changes everything. Zero heat, all tension.
Would I Relisten to It?
No. One and done. Once you know where it goes, there’s not much reason to go back. But it stuck with me.
